More moving house...

This week my Dad is moving house and I've been helping him pack up everything- so I decided to document as much as possible, as it fits in nicely with my project fortunately enough! These are just a few images from today's clearance attempt.

Wednesday 2nd November

Here are some photos from the new empty place. It's kindof like being in limbo. Everywhere is bare and lacking a feeling of home.

Flick Book

After I made the short stop-motion video clip I started to thinking about making a flick book. I just used the photos I'd used for the video and printed them all out and attempted to construct them into a book.

The structure didn't really work all that well though, so I decided it would be better to put my images in an already-made book (if only to make life easier, and keep the focus on the flicking of images rather than the construction of a little book).

My own little printing experiment...

Last Tuesday we were given our first print demonstration and I was SO impressed! I was really amazed at what you can create in such a short space of time- and was particularly taken by the mono-printing. I had tried printing before in the portfolio course I did last year, but only did a small bit of mono-printing and then some reduction printing with lino which I quite enjoyed.
Anyway, after I went home on Tuesday I was itching to try it myself and apply print to my project in some way, so I decided to improvise with the materials I had at home. I got thinking that oil-based ink was what was being used in a lot of the print demos, so I thought I would just experiment with using some oil paint and spread it out on a piece of tracing paper as it wouldn't be absorbed by the paper.

I then put a piece of paper over the ink and drew on the back (without leaning on the page).

The results left on the  tracing paper
were nearly as nice as the finished prints.

I then started to experiment with adding colour, but just in small sections like in some of the paintings I've done before.

Thread

To further explore the line drawings I'd made and to follow on from wire I decided to start using a needle and thread. These are thread on paper. I found the thread got caught quite often and tangled itself up, but I thought it looked quite interesting.

This is the back of the page- almost like a map...

Wire

While working with the wire, I was kindof struggling as it was almost too thin to manipulate and the idea of the structure wasn't really happening, so I started to double the wire over by twisting it.

This helped me become less precious and precise about drawing/sculpting with the wire and made it easier to shape and manipulate it.

I started by doing a quick, small drawing to figure out how best to work with the wire.

The next piece I started to work on was much more enjoyable- I liked developing the pattern using wire. It reminded me of sewing or drawing on something like an etch-a-sketch, mainly because I was working in straight lines and generally used a continuous piece of wire, to avoid having to re-attach the wire to the structure.
I've also started to look at the work of Cathy Miles- this is really lovely delicate work, especially that of "The Tool Shed", in which she created an entire garden shed's worth of tools out of wire.

More Outline Work...

After playing around with outlining the colour image of my room, I decided to do the same with bigger grey scale images. I then traced these outlines using tracing paper and the result was some nice, almost elegant, line drawings.

I think my next step with these might be towards using wire...

Monday 17th October

When I went looking for wire this green tying wire was the only one available

I decided I to strip the green plastic covering off the wire

I experimented with different ways of joining the wire

I began to play with the structure, starting with 2D...

Working from Outlines

I looked at the image of my old bedroom and decided to outline the photos, objects and possessions- I was trying to define the clutter. But then I began to notice how the clutter had become so much apart of the room, and it was almost difficult to see the difference between what structurally made up the room and what had been collected and added over the years.

I took a photo of this image and cropped it to focus on the most interesting part. I printed this out in black and white and decided to paint on top of the image. First I started out small, and then repeated this on a larger printed image. I felt that this, in a way, highlighted how colour (symbolic of personal possessions/ objects/ memories) when added to an otherwise boring room/space can bring life to the space.

I then decided to do a larger painting of the result, on a piece of drawing board (MDF I think it's called?)
I started by drawing on the board
Then I primed with white paint
I added each colour block by block
